Closed Door Practice

Defensive lineman James Larky can hardly believe he’s been drafted to the unstoppable Roanoke Rattlers—the winningest team in the newly formed League of American Football (LAF). Coach Ed Gale has a way of making his football team work flawlessly. On the surface, his strict training techniques, health and nutrition plans, and incredible training facility (to which no one outside the organization may enter) seem to be what makes the difference. But real motivation happens behind those closed doors. It’s not until after the rookies sign their contracts that they find out why there are so many secrets. To the outsider, mysteries abound. Why are Rattlers never injured? Why do the players never talk about their training? How is Coach Gale able to pull off a championship every year? Journalists like James’s sister, Carissa, have been unable to crack the secrets without help from inside. The players find out soon enough. They are given motivation they can’t deny—saving their lives. But now that the media has a connection, maybe Gale’s magic will be unveiled. What will that mean for the undefeated champions? Will the football-thirsty country even care? What will happen to the coach already teetering on the edge of his sanity? How far will he go to protect his dynasty?
